CLASS NOTES
1993
Hello! Thanks for all the great feedback you’ve sent regarding our e-mail distribution of this column. To those of you who have asked me to update your e-mail address or be added to our distribution list, please note: class notes are distributed via e-mail to all alumnae from the class of ’93 who have e-mails listed with the Alumnae Association. To add or change your address, please go to http://alumnae.smith.edu and update your information. Now, on to the news.
Our classmates have welcomed a number of new people to the world. Congratulations to all. Our president, Deborah Rosenthal, and husband Mark had a baby boy, Matthew, in March.
Tenley Zinke Black welcomed daughter Aurelia last December.
Kamina Henderson Pinder became the proud mother of daughter Spencer in Nov. ’04.
Carmelen (Chin) Buenviaje Chiusano shares this update: “After living in San Francisco for eight years and meeting Michael, my husband, we moved to Keyport, NJ, to be near our families. Yes, we want to go back to San Francisco! But things are good. In June ’03, I gave birth to our daughter, Elea. She is now learning to talk and is discovering that she is her own being. She is absolutely all love! We are having so much fun being parents and loving her. I love being a mommy and a partner with Michael. At the same time, I am relearning how to find balance within my self, if that makes any sense! I finally found my niche working at the Center for the Study of Health Beliefs and Behavior that consists of Rutgers University, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. I am the administrator and part of a research collaboration that is studying how health beliefs among elderly patients affect how they manage their chronic illnesses. I really like that I am in an academic environment again. I miss the circle of friends I felt I had at Smith, and hope to get back in touch with them. I have been corresponding with Ali Stafford ’94, who is living in Paris, and is a teacher and mommy. It’s incredible how much things can change and yet, they really don’t inside.”
Susie Kwon Kim and husband Scott have three sons: twins Eric and Ryan, 11, and Matthew, 8.
Congratulations to Ellen Chun Kim, who recently become a partner in the corporate department of the New York law firm Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschtritt LLP. She writes, “I commute from New Jersey, where my husband, Jonathan, and I live with our daughter, Sadie, 16 months, and two dogs.”
Mikeisha Anderson ran into Jen Birmingham at Nordstrom’s in the Short Hills Mall in New Jersey.
Classmates, do you have your own professional Web site? Or blog? Here are some updates from classmates who do; don’t you wish we had the Web when we were at Smith?
Jodi Shaw writes, “I am a singer-songwriter living in Brooklyn, NY. I host a weekly performance series at a small club here in Brooklyn, and also work the New York underground as a street performer on the subway platforms (this has been by far one of the most spiritual experiences of my life!) I had a song placed recently on the new Rave MP3 player (yeah!) and was chosen to be included on Vol. 2 of 15 Minutes, an independent songwriters’ compilation hosted by JPF Music in New Orleans. As one of the winners of a song contest for Rockrgrl magazine, I will also appear in the Rockrgrl 2005 Discoveries compilation. I am currently recording my second album with Steve Addabbo here in New York City. When the record is complete, I will be heading off to perform on the streets and in the clubs of Europe.”
Elizabeth Solaka is new to New York City, and would love to get in contact with other Smithies.
Chelsea Jenter moved back to the Boston area after living in Seattle for three years. In 2000, she received her master’s in public health degree, and works at Brigham and Women’s Hospital on a health-care quality improvement grant. She keeps in contact with Sonya Rhie Quintanilla, Amy Mumma Raskopf, Jessica Locheed ’92, and Diana Wetherall Katz ’94.
Anne Crow, who was known on campus as Christine Burger, has been in Chicago the last five years, now single. She works for Fourth Presbyterian Church, across from the John Hancock Building, overseeing the community garden and occasional building projects, and coordinating small study groups. She writes, “I’m in touch with Meredith Howard ’95, Jessica Patton ’92 and JJ Whatley. I’ve just started to feel settled in the last half year or so, and am loving exploring different neighborhoods and getting more connected with animal rights activities here in the city.”
